   South Africa - Pietermaritzburg

Immediate Care Facility

$13,500

The project is intended to establish a community home - short-term place of care facility - for no more than 6 children at a time aged 6-12yrs who have been abused and/or affected by hiv and aids and are requiring immediate alternative care. Currently there is no such facility in the Pietermaritzburg area and this has been identified as a pressing need by local child welfare agencies and state officials.

The project intends to provide start-up costs for the project to enable it to establish itself

The project is being planned in co-operation with local child protection agencies who will seek ongoing funding to supplement the place of safety fees payable by the State Welfare Department in respect of each child placed.

A local bank who has repossessed the identified property is committed to placing the balance of the payment due on the property into an endowment fund to generate interest to cover the monthly utility costs (elec, telephone and water) and an agreement has already been signed to that effect with the intended beneficiary organisation "The Child & Family Welfare Society of Pietermaritzburg". The Department of Housing has expressed an interest in assisting with the renovation of the said property and the relevant motivationb and documentation as requested by the said Department is currently being assessed.

The host partner will through its members assist in practically setting up the project and in furnishing the property which may include curtain making, building cupboards and shelving and providing transport for delivery.

Together with the local Child Welfare Society the host club will manage the project funds and will visit the site to monitor progress and stewardship of any investment made.

The co-ordinating rotarian of the host club is currently involved in the welfare sector and her expertise in managing projects of this nature will be extensively used

Renovations have been completed by the local government housing dept - took a little longer than planned BUT worth it and the place is looking good. Furnishings have been purchased by the local club of Rotary Azalea and were delivered yesterday. Grass is being cut and quotes for a jumgle gym are being sought. The local child welfare agency has interviewed prospective house mothersand suitable candidates have been identified. The project should be completely up and running by end March 2010

<17-Oct-10> by julie Todd
A report was entered about 3mths ago after the last request - not sure what happened. The house was renovated and the furnishings purchased. The house mother was employed in April and 1 week later the first children were housed at the shelter. As of the end of July 11 children had benefitted from the shelter There are a few things still to be attended to such as the garden and some decorative furniture and bathroom fixtures. In August the jungle gym was erected. All funds should be utilised by end October
